About Us

Matahui Road School is a small independent primary school situated within a picturesque rural setting in Katikati in the Bay of Plenty. It was founded in 1988 by Christine Hobart and Mennie Scapens as an alternative to what was offered in the catchment area. A learning journey led the school to embrace Howard Gardner’s theory of Multiple Intelligences and Art Costa’s Habits of the Mind which are both now fundamental aspects of classroom programmes.

The school has continued to grow and now includes 6 classrooms, administration block, a multipurpose room which includes a specialist music area and a library, all set in beautiful surrounds. The school has two more classrooms planned to cater for growth to a maximum of 150 students.

A bus service operates from Tauranga and from Paeroa (via Waihi Beach).

The school is governed by the Matahui Road School Charitable Trust comprising of three appointed Trustees and three Trustees who are elected by the school community.

Matahui Road School is a member of Independent Schools of New Zealand. The school is funded primarily through school fees and fundraising with the government also providing a contribution towards operations funding.

Parents play an important role in the school and although they come from as far a field as Paeroa and Tauranga, they are highly supportive and involved in their children’s education. Parent involvement is encouraged in all areas including academic, sport, outdoor programmes, camps and the Parent Committee.

Decision making at Matahui Road School is a consultative process. Parents and the wider community are consulted in a number of ways including weekly school newsletter, Parent Committee meetings, parent interviews, consultation evenings and surveys.
