English, Maori and New Zealand Sign Language are the official languages of New Zealand.
At Matahui Road School, all subjects are taught in the English language, however Maori and sign language may be incorporated in classroom programmes through the use of greetings, numbers, colours, simple phrases or instructions, and song.
All cultures and languages are valued and respected and we enjoy the richness that cultural diversity adds to our school and our learning.
In addition, Year 7 & 8 students participate in planned second language learning sessions, learning French with Chrissy Rosoman. Every second year, our Year 7 & 8 students are offered the opportunity to participate in a Tahiti exchange programme. This not only promotes their French language learning but provides a cultural experience and develops intra/interpersonal skills as they gain independence and confidence living in a homestay situation for two weeks in a foreign language country.
