Values education is an important aspect of Matahui classroom programmes.
We have identified 17 core values that we believe are important for children to understand and assimilate in their behaviour to help them become considerate and successful young people.
Each week children are introduced to a new value. Throughout the week children are reminded of the meaning and examples of the value through praise in class and in the playground.
Each week, the citizenship certificate is awarded to a student who the teachers have nominated as having demonstrated this particular value through the week. With only 38 weeks in the school year and one award per week, the Citizenship award has become a highly sought after award.
The week’s focus value is also highlighted in our weekly newsletter so parents can discuss and help their child to display these values at home also.
